E-Library
Many schools in Ghana offer computer science classes — but without computers! As a result, essential IT skills that could help children and young people access better job opportunities remain purely theoretical and abstract. This is also a problem in Saboba. This is where the E-Library of the Saboba Youth Center (SYC) comes into play: In this computer lab, children and young people can learn how to use computers in practical courses. Core skills that are taught here include using common programs such as Microsoft Office, researching on the Internet and ten-finger typing.
The skills acquired in the E-Library open up new educational and career prospects, as these abilities are essential for many well-paying jobs in Ghana. Moreover, the E-Library provides a space where students can work on school and university projects and access online learning resources.
The E-Library is still in development. In the spring of 2024, the SYC launched a pilot phase where participants of the Children's Parliament receive IT lessons twice a week and prepare for parliamentary debates. Currently, about 25 children are participating in the courses.
Demand is high, but the SYC’s available resources are limited. In 2024, Biyoom e.V. provided the SYC with four laptops for the E-Library. Additionally, the SYC management’s three laptops are used for the courses. However, there is still a need for more computers and a stable internet connection. Currently, SYC volunteers rely on their mobile phones as hotspots. Efforts are underway to provide the SYC with additional resources to expand the E-Library further. Donations, such as used but functional laptops, are highly appreciated.
